St Brynach’s Church, Nevern

Historic church in rural Pembrokeshire

Croeso ~ Welcome

Nevern is a rural village in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The surrounding land is devoted largely to agriculture. The church was founded by St Brynach in 540A.D., and the present building dates from around 1400.

Our congregation has a strong dedication and commitment to our faith. We are an active and outward-reaching community, with activities and social events throughout the year.

Church Services

We hold services on most Sundays at 9:30a.m., though there are occasional joint services with other churches in the area. Please check our Calendar. Services are conducted by Revd. Emma Kendall, our Focal Minister Steve Watkins, and a rota of priests who are old friends of the Church.

Visitors are always welcome to our services. If you come early, you will hear our magnificent bells ringing from about 9am. After the service, we meet for coffee in the church hall.

Services

Parking – The proprietors of the Trewern Arms (a 5 minute walk just across the bridge) have kindly agreed that we can park there. Parking space immediately around the church is limited. (Map)

Toilets – There are conveniences in the Church Hall, which is just across the road from the main entrance, and also behind the Village Hall on the way from the Trewern Arms.

Visit St Brynach’s

The church is open throughout the day. In addition to the opportunity for quiet contemplation, there are many interesting things to see both inside and outside the church and in the surrounding area: Ogham writing on the old stones, the Bleeding Yew, and nearby the castle and the Pilgrims’ Cross.

We can if you wish arrange a guided tour of the church, castle, and village.

Please support the church

It costs roughly £75 per day to keep this beautiful historic place open.

We do not generally receive money from the central church or the government or other outside body. We have received some grants towards specific purposes such as restoration of the tower. Apart from that, the small congregation bears the costs.

We are most grateful for donations from our visitors, who are often very generous.

Commercial tours must please make a contribution to the church funds. Please contact the church warden.

Coffee mornings

Join us any Tuesday 10:30 – noon for tea or coffee.

Pastoral Care

Our vicar is the Revd. Emma Kendall. She has responsibility for the churches at Nevern, Newport and Dinas.

Emma is experienced in youth work, teaching, and team development. She has also directed and written for theatre, and is a Cordon Bleu Chef.

For home visits, weddings, funerals, or permissions please get in touch with our vicar, Revd. Emma Kendall (revemmakendall@gmail.com).

Bell Ringing

We have a wonderful ring of 10 bells (plus 3 chiming bells). Visiting ringers are most welcome. We hold practices on Saturdays from 10:30, and Mondays from 7pm.

And if you’d like to try bell ringing – or just to find out more about it – we’d love to hear from you! It’s great exercise for the mind and body, as well as being very sociable. Not all of our ringers are church-goers.

The church tower and bells were refurbished in 2022 with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Pembrokeshire County Council, several other funding bodies, and many generous individuals.
